Zarif: Iran’s Peace Plan for Yemen Can Still Work

Yamanyoon- 9 Nov 2017

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif highlighted the applicability of a four-point plan he had put forward more than two years ago for bringing peace to Yemen.

In a post in his Twitter account on Thursday, the top Iranian diplomat implicitly complained about the United Nations’ inattention to the peace plan he had proposed for Yemen in 2015.

“In 2015, soon after Saudi coalition initiated war on Yemen, I wrote to #UNSG offering a 4 point peace plan: Ceasefire; Humanitarian Assistance; Intra-Yemeni Dialog; & Inclusive Government. Over 2.5 years & many lives later, that plan is still valid today,” he said.

Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its allies have launched a military campaign against Yemen to restore power to the fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

Since then, more than 14,000 people have been killed and millions have been forced from their homes as a result of the attacks, while the country is also facing severe famine and a deadly cholera outbreak.

In April 2015, Zarif submitted a letter to the then UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, outlining his four-point peace plan for Yemen, which calls for an immediate ceasefire and end of all foreign military attacks, humanitarian assistance, a resumption of broad national dialogue and establishment of an inclusive national unity government.
